FIVE THINGS JESSICA NADEAU

FIVE THINGS WITH CYCLIST JESSICA NADEAU

FIVE THINGS is a feature on the Banjo Brothers Blog. It’s a short interview about life and bicycles with a notable person. This week's notable person is Minneapolis-based cyclist Jessica Nadeau.

Nadeau is a grant writer, development specialist and has been an important  force behind many classic cycling events in Minneapolis including the Powderhorn 24, The Scardey Cat, Babes in Bikeland and more.

We hope you enjoy this week's Banjo Brothers Five Things.

BANJO BROS: WHAT ARE YOU RIDING?

JN: My personal favorite is a bike I bought a few summers ago. It’s a Capricorn handmade by Brad Wilson and I believe he custom designed it for himself when he lived in Minneapolis. Luck would have it that I happen to be the same size as an incredibly talented frame builder because the thing fits me like a glove and it’s a whole lot of fun to ride. It has gears! As someone that was fairly vehement about enjoying the simplicity of riding single speed for so long, but paid the price by now permanently having knees that crunch like a potato chip bag, I guess it’s a good change.

BANJO BROS: WHERE ARE YOU RIDING?

JN: One of my favorite little rides to do in the city is when my group of friends meet up for happy hour, generally on Fridays. We have a favorite spot in the woods on a lakeshore that we meet up at and pack our own happy hour snacks and beverages and hang out until the sun sets. It’s a great way to end your week.

BANJO BROS: WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO, READING OR WATCHING?

JN: I’ve recently started watching all of the Marvel movies and streaming shows in order from start to finish. Not in release date order, but the intended story arc order. I believe it’s a full nine days straight worth of media so it’s probably going to take me a while to get through it all. I had already seen a fair amount but there were definitely some key movies and shows I just never got around to seeing. I’m kind of a completist and after Stan Lee died I decided to embark on this journey.  Some of it is really good but I’m realizing just how bad some of it is too. Somehow I missed the first Hulk movie? It’s just awful and I actually like Edward Norton or at least I used to. And the beginning of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a bit of a slog, but I’ve heard it gets better

BANJO BROS: WHAT ARE YOU COOKING, EATING/DRINKING?

JN: The coffee counter in my kitchen could probably only be a little more ridiculous if I had my own La Marzocco espresso maker. My other favorite brown beverage is whiskey. I’m a huge fan of the classic Old Fashioned. Food-wise, eggs are one of my all-time favorite foods. I know there was a food trend for a while to put an egg on everything but that is not a trend for me, it’s a way of life. I also feel genuinely lucky to live in a city with such an amazing culinary scene. There are so many new and exciting restaurants opening all the time and I’m lucky enough to live just a few blocks away from Colita which just opened a few months ago. I believe they describe the food as Tex-Oaxacan and it’s all just incredible. My other favorite place right now is Bull’s Horn, which is the old Sunrise Inn. Their cheeseburger is top notch.

BANJO BROS: WHAT'S STUCK IN YOUR CRAW?

JN: The patriarchy, the US prison industrial complex, our current administration, the fact that over 40 million Americans have a lack of access to basic affordable health care, shoaling, bicycles with gas motors on the greenway.
