Truth be told, I'm not doing much riding lately due to the arrival of Child #2. My ride is generally the 2.6 miles to and from work. What's great about it, however, is that I go over the Mississippi every day. Once in the morning light and now in the dark.

I am a native of Norfolk, Virginia (Shiptown) and come from a family of dentists (I am one of seventeen over three generations. I am not one easily annoyed, but find the concept of a "dentist bike" a popular dig on cycling forums rather tired and really not applicable.

For those not familiar with Smith’s shenanigans or weekly musings on his blog/journal, here, in his own words is the backstory: My name is Steve, but have long been known in some circles as Stevil. That originally came about via a woman I used to messenger with after riding a recycling bin down a long flight of stairs and after getting pitched onto the sidewalk at the bottom, I scorpioned and kicked the back of my own head. For the last nine years I’ve managed all things ‘All Hail The Black Market’, and before that handled Swobo’s marketing duties, where I dusted off that old moniker.

Now, an elder statesman among cyclists in Minneapolis, Hurl is known worldwide for his iconic Cars-R-Coffins brand, represented by a simple line drawing of a four-wheeled coffin. Birthed by a ‘Zine, the sentiment behind the brand still resonates with cyclists and not just out of nostalgia. A carefully curated set of goods still exist bearing the mark and are as much a form of artistic expression as a means of paying the bills.
