FIVE THINGS RAD DAD EDITION: CYCLIST JAMES ORIONE
Five Things is a weekly feature on the Banjo Brothers Blog started in 2018. Five Things posts are short articles (interviews) we publish every Friday where we talk to different kinds of cyclists about life and bicycles.
The Rad Dad Edition is a variation of Five Things articles leading-up to Father’s Day. This post-Father's day entry is a bonus edition. These blog posts show how kids and family-life factor into these Dad's bikestyle.
Rad Dad #4 is James Orione. James is also the founder of Bridges Through Yoga an organization that brings yoga to where people are and Person of Color led. Bridges Through Yoga also facilities conversations about race through yoga.

BANJO BROS: WHAT ARE YOU AND YOUR KID(S) RIDING?
JO: Ursai rides a WeeRide Co-pilot and in a burley trailer, but her preferred wheels are skateboards and rollerblades. I am riding a Bianchi Pista or Axis.
Music is super important in my life and creates an access point to the world. I would like to make world music as common as pop music. We also like to ride to the beach!
BANJO BROS: WHERE DO YOU RIDE WITH YOUR KID(S)?
JO: One of our favorite rides take place in the fall to go to the Global Roots Festival at the Cedar Cultural Center. Music is super important in my life and creates an access point to the world. I would like to make world music as common as pop music. We also like to ride to the beach!
BANJO BROS: WHAT ARE YOU WATCHING/READING/LISTENING TOO WITH YOUR KID(S)?
JO: I am a little behind as an adult but we are sharing Harry Potter for the first time. It is riveting thus far and cannot wait for bedtime to keep the pages turning. We love the movie Coco - we listen to the soundtrack regularly and create dances to the music. The Carolina Chocolate Drops , Spice Girls, Bollywood, international music, 90’s pop and other movie soundtracks are also high on our list of music. We always sing along and dance!
BANJO BROS: WHAT ARE YOU COOKING/EATING/DRINKING WITH YOUR KID(S)?
JO: We love roasting brussel sprouts, eating donuts from The Baker’s Wife, and Tamale Tuesdays from La Loma!!! We mostly drink water because I once gave her half a can of Coca-Cola and had to chase her around an antique store for an hour.
BANJO BROS: WHAT’S STUCK IN YOUR CRAW ABOUT RAISING KIDS?
JO: I’m concerned about the ways in which kids are immediately pushed into categories without letting them explore who they are as individuals first. I’m conscious of making decisions that help to counteract what others prescribe for her as a girl and specifically a biracial kid. That said, I’m a joyful parent - the growth I see in her is invigorating and life-giving. I am constantly thinking about how to co-create an environment with Ursai that will allow her to be fearless, strong, creative, and that establishes a culture of respect.
